SGM fixtures at Splendour in the Grass

It was wet, it was muddy, it was the perfect conditions for SGM’s range of IP65 LED fixtures.

This year’s Splendour in the Grass festival in Byron Bay close to the famous Gold Coast (located in New South Wales in Australia) hosted a significant quantity of SGM’s market leading outdoor lighting fixtures. With damp experiences from the past haunting festival organisers and production managers, the requirement for lighting that could withstand torrential winter rainfall was the highest of priorities. And Mother Nature did not disappoint!

The four day event saw SGM lighting fixtures such as the P-5 RGBW wash and the Q-7 RGBW flood take part in several installs and stage packages across the festival. A most notable display being that of Melbourne artist Sam Songailo. His 20x20 metre square maze comprising of 100 large pillars was a high attraction of the festival, gathering thousands of attendees at any given time. Entertainment Technology Australia’s very own Taylor Chadwick was recruited as lighting designer for the install, in charge of bringing the display to life every evening of the festival. “Lots of colour, lots of movement and a lighting fixture that was powerful enough to illuminate not just the visible face, but also throw light inside and through the 20 metre display,” remarked Taylor in regard to the artist’s brief for lighting. “Having worked a lot with the SGM P-5, I knew it was the only fixture for the job. High quality RGBW colour mixing, 25,000 lumen output, built in wireless DMX and of course IP65 rating.” All factors that contributed to the choice of the P-5, Taylor said. Artist Sam Songailo was also impressed by the SGM P-5, “The size, weight and overall footprint of the P-5 is remarkable when you look at the light it is putting out.”

The 12 SGM P-5’s operated flawlessly over the 4 day event despite the heavy rain, mud and some sunshine that they encountered.
