Crowne Plaza Doha - The Business Park

Our customer

With more than 4,400 properties in over 100 countries, the Intercontinental Hotels Group (IHG) has some of the best-known hotel brands in the world. From the iconic family hotel, Holiday Inn, to the luxurious Crowne Plaza Doha, IHG brands are some of the most respected hotels in the industry.

The new Crowne Plaza Doha is one of the group's latest additions to its vast portfolio. Located at Qatar's new The Business Park complex, it lies adjacent to Doha International Airport. Its premier location, set in the heart of Doha's city's banking and business districts, means it is the mainstay for business clientele from around the world.

The expectation

The team at IHG needed the exterior lighting of the hotel to be of the highest quality – to complement the stunning glass façade of the buildings. At the same time, given the location of the hotel in Qatar, on the coast of the Persian Gulf, where temperatures can reach heights of up to 38°C, exterior lighting had to withstand extremely high temperatures and provide a long service life to extend maintenance cycles.

The Crowne Plaza Doha also contributes to IHG's GREEN engage scheme, the company's advanced online tool, which measures the day-to-day environmental impact of its participating hotels. IHG created GREEN Engage to ensure that its hotels are designed, built and run for optimal sustainability, so reducing energy usage is integral to this scheme. As such, with a large amount of exterior lighting required – opting for a highly energy efficient scheme was a top priority.

The solution

IHG partnered with local design firm Nouran concept and GE Lighting, and specified 2,400 meters of its Tetra Contour LED Lighting System in blue, red and warm white color. The LED Tetra Contour is a flexible LED light engine that can be molded on site to fit the shape of architectural features. GE's LED system was the ideal solution for the Crowne Plaza Doha due to its performance as well as aesthetic benefits.

The system provides energy saving up to 40% when compared to the neon lights traditionally used for exterior façade lighting.

The Tetra Contour LED Lighting System has been specifically designed to resemble exposed neon in a variety of architectural and accent lighting applications, including border lighting, accent lighting, art andlight sculpture, as well as cove lighting. The system provides 330 degrees beam angle creating the warm "glow" associated with neon.

Finally, the product is weather-resistant and has a rated life of over 50.000 hours that made it extremely suitable for the hot, dessert climate.

Results and benefits

The Tetra® Contour LED Lighting system is providing the Crowne Plaza Doha with numerous advantages over traditional neon lights - including improved energy efficiency, attractive aesthetics, light output , robustness, low–voltage operation, long life, weather resistance as well as reducing maintenance cycles.

"The façade lighting from GE had to deliver on a number of levels," explained Mr. Adam Harvey Director of sales and marketing from Crowne Plaza Doha- The Business Park. "With such an architecturally appealing building, the lighting had to enhance the hotel's exterior as first impressions are vital in the hospitality sector and for such a global brand. However lowering environmental impact was incredibly important. As one of our 'GREEN Engage' hotels – all aspects of the Crowne Plaza Doha's design and construction had to demonstrate sustainable thinking. This meant we wanted to utilize the latest LED technology to ensure energy use was reduced on a long term – without compromising the striking visual of the hotel. We feel that has been achieved perfectly."
