Doha Expressway: Improving Energy Efficiency and Environmental Sustainability

Our Customer

The Doha Expressway project, involving outdoor lighting and tunnel lighting solutions, was undertaken by GE Lighting with the solutions offered to meet the environmental and sustainability goals outlined by the Qatar National Vision 2030. The prestigious project reflected the commitment of the Qatari Government to provide state-of-the-art transport infrastructure to address the growing vehicular traffic, with the outdoor lighting solutions chosen for energy efficiency, aesthetics and minimal environmental impact.

The Challenge

The expectation from GE Lighting was to provide a solution with very high efficiency. GE explored the design and technical capability to achieve efficient results with less number of luminaires, which fit to the customer's expectations. The overall lead time for project delivery was also a challenge that GE addressed by leveraging its supply chain and maximizing operational efficiency to deliver the project on schedule.

The Solution

GE focused on its extensive experience in undertaking the diverse requirements associated with the Doha Expressway project. Among the key products used on the project include the PFE-400 range of powerful floodlights that can feature up to 400W HPS lamps. It was chosen for ability to assure excellent illumination of tunnels and motorway junctions & intersections. GE's T5 family of lamps, which represent a significant advance in fluorescent technology, were also used for the project.

The combination of specialized photometric distributions - offering easy eye adaptation, low glare and good visibility - make GE tunnel lighting fixtures a perfect choice for tunnel installations. Among other considerations was to use less number of fixtures to make maintenance easier and less time-consuming.

Results and Benefits

The adoption of GE Lighting's tunnel and outdoor lighting solutions has helped achieve a reduction in energy consumption compared to traditional outdoor street lighting solutions. The solutions will also contribute to reduced maintenance costs and other overheads associated with outdoor lighting.

Having been associated with prestigious lighting projects in the country, the successful project further GE's commitment to support the country with energy-efficient solutions that promote all-round sustainability.
